Artists in Residence for the US Government (Self-Declared)  Momenta Art, Brooklyn, NY April 1 - May 8, 2011

The Institute for Wishful Thinking’s project, Artists in Residence for the U. S. Government (self declared), believes that the community of artists and designers possess untapped creative and conceptual resources that can be applied to solving social problems.  Therefore, we asked: What if we bridged government and art ? and invited our community to submit proposals to be Artists in Residence for the US Government.  Each proposal was geared toward a particular governmental department.  For example, an artist might situate themselves within the US Citizenship and Immigration Services or the Department of Health. Using a conceptual toolbox that might contain activism, philosophy, urban studies, anthropology and political science as well as their experience in critical thinking and reframing they would generate processes that address a social issue. The environment we created at Momenta Art incorporated tables with graphic charts reflecting government and institutional spending and financial resources. For the duration of the exhibition we hosted presentations of proposals by the Artists in Residence as well as conversations around the possibility of artists working as change agents—imagining what could happen in the best possible future.
